Date nights are so important in relationships. While they are hard to come by after having kids, it’s not impossible. With a large family like mine, finding a sitter is tough, so we spend most of our date nights in the comfort of our own home. We put the kids to bed early (or turn a movie on in their rooms) and enjoy the quality time, alone.
One year, for Christmas, I created a date night of the month scrapbook. Money was tight and date nights away from home were not in the cards. The book I made had a creative date night-in theme with it. He was able to pick a day for that month to have the date, I shopped for the necessary supplies for the date, and it was a blast! I’m stoked to come across the book to write this post.
Granted, this book was made two years ago, and it looks so tacky (money was that tight, but I made it work). The look on his face as he read each month (yes, I wrote cheesy poems) made the book totally worth it.
In the meantime, if you are looking for creative date night-in ideas, read below! The following are the tried and true ordeal. We modify to make it our own, and the possibilities are endless. Our marriage is so much better when we have the time alone that we deserve.
I narrowed our date night-in ideas down to nine. We have a bunch more, but these are the ones we do frequently!
Fondue and Wine Night
We look forward to fondue night. The cheese fondue and chocolate fondue I make are quick, easy, and delicious! I find a good pinot grigio to go with the cheese fondue and a sweet red wine for the chocolate, and call it a date night.
His Favorites Date
For this date night, I make his favorite dinner, his favorite dessert, and make sure he has his favorite drink on hand. During this date night, we also talk about his favorite hobbies, parts of his day, etc. Some of it may bore me (once he’s on a car topic, for instance, I’m toast), but listening to him talk about his joys and favorites make a difference. You may find something during the conversation that could potentially become a next date idea.
Takeout and a Movie
It’s one of the most common date night-in ideas, but also fairly cheap. Order takeout from your favorite restaurant, find a new movie, and relax for the night. Don’t forget the drinks, too! Easy to plan, easy to please!
DIY Paint and Drinks
If you enjoy Wine and Canvas or Painting with a Twist, recreate your own at home! I’m not the next Leonardo Da Vinci, and neither is he. Having a memorable creative masterpiece without leaving the house is well worth it. Plus, it’s fun.
Ice Cream Sundaes
It takes less than $10, but my ice cream obsessed husband loves making his own sundaes. It’s a great date, especially during the warm summer months.
Cheesy YouTube Video Night
Sounds crazy, but we enjoy this a lot! We pick a topic (misheard song lyrics, for example) and set up a queue of videos to kill time. Can’t decide on a topic? Write down five random topics on paper bits, throw them in a hat, and draw. We have had some fun with this one!
Throwback Date Night
Whether you’ve been together for a year or for 20 years, pick a memorable date and recreate it at home. If your first date at Pizza Hut was the most memorable, then order Pizza Hut delivery and make it a date without leaving the house.
There’s a First for Everything
It’s always fun to reminisce about the firsts with your spouse. We do so, all the time. To this day, we still create first milestones, too. This would also be perfect to recreate your first date, at home!
Create a Date Around a Hobby of His
Do you have a gaming guy? Play video games and enjoy some pizza. Does he like cars? Browse through some car magazines and let him talk away about each model. Guys love it when they can enjoy their hobbies with you.
